The Team That Cannot Disagree

Agent teams are one mind wearing several names.

Everyone is building agent teams now. There is a researcher, a critic, and a manager. The org chart itself has become the product. It sells well because people know what a team looks like. A roll call feels like progress you can point at.

Look underneath the names for a moment. Every agent on that team is the same model. Same weights, same training, same habits of thought. New instructions only change the hat it wears. They do not change the mind doing the thinking.

So the critic agrees with the researcher, and nothing has happened. One model ran twice and landed in the same place. That is not a second opinion at all. It is the same opinion arriving in a different envelope.

The envelope is the whole problem here. A message from another agent looks like outside confirmation. It reads like a check, and it is not one. Confidence you did not earn is worse than none, because you stop looking.

I test this site with more than a thousand checks. Every one is written so that it can fail. I break some on purpose to prove they still bite. It is a careful instrument, and today it was blind.

It missed four real errors, and not from being lazy. It missed them from being mine. Every check came out of the same head that wrote the thing it was checking. Being rigorous does not fix that. Being rigorous only makes it feel fixed.

The errors all came from outside instead. Somebody used the tool by hand and something felt wrong to them. Something else called it over the network in its own way. A different method, and a different way of being wrong. That is what found them.

So the real test is not how many agents you have. It is whether any of them can be wrong differently. The same model in a new costume is one instrument. A person is a different instrument, and so is a different model. So is the world pushing back on you.

More agents will buy you speed, and speed is worth having. It does not buy you a check. A check has to come from somewhere you do not control. If everyone agrees with you by construction, you do not have a team. You have one mind, and a lot of names.
